George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project
George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project: Navigation Assessment
TyPlan prepared a navigational assessment of the proposed new George Massey Bridge to replace the existing George Massey Tunnel. The study scope included a review of the Port Metro Vancouver's new land use plan, assessment of the navigability of the deep sea channel(s) to accommodate existing and future vessels potentially utilizing the Fraser river.
Detailed assessment of the world wide fleet vessel characteristics associated with Liquefied natural gas, container and bulk carriers was utilized to determine the percentage of the world wide fleet by vessel type that could navigate under the bridge at varying vertical clearances, and the percentage of the world wide fleet that could navigate at various water drafts considering the removal of the existing cover rock at the tunnel. Navigational clearances were subsequently recommended based on the finding.
